Typically, any surplus electricity generated by Solar PV systems is fed back to the grid, but with a Smart Switch such as Solar iBoost and Immersun, any surplus electricity is used to heat water in your household water tank. This allows you to maximise the use of the free energy generated by your solar panels, cut the cost of heating your water, and reduce the use of your boiler.

A typical household generating a surplus of 2kW will take around 2.5 hours to warm a 100ltr tank from 20 degrees to 60 degrees with a Smart Switch fitted, giving a approximate saving of £0.50 per day.

Unless you have an export meter fitted, you will also still be paid the deemed export rate of 50% of your system’s generation through the Feed in Tariff, even though you will be using 100% of it within your home.

We can install Smart Switches to homes with existing Solar PV systems and a hot water tank. There are small differences between the Solar iBoost and the Immersun that may make one a better option than the other for your home – usually however, either is possible.
